In 1968, the maturing members of the 55th Manchester Boys Brigade football team decided to form an amateur football club, allowing themselves the opportunity to continue to play together long after their time with the BB (Boys' Brigade) had come to an end.
As this new football club was seen as a natural progression from the BB, it was agreed that the name 'Fives' (owing itself to the two numeral figures of the 55th) would be employed for the new clubs' name - hence the unusual, yet memorable name!
Fives commenced their inaugral season in the Bolton-based Mid-Lancashire League and three seasons later progressed to the South Manchester & Wythenshawe League, where the club claimed its first trophy in the 1972/73 season.
The team played on Bolton Road Playing Fields in Salford.
In 1975, Fives moved league again, this time to the Eccles & District Amateur League, winning several league and cup trophies before the club decided to change direction and concentrate on restricted age teams.
The demise in local open-age football has seen all three of Fives original leagues fold, so the switch was an obvious one, returning the Club to it’s roots whilst ensuring the name carried on.
New generations of young players donned Fives’ colours in the Altrincham Youth League and the Leigh and District Youth League with great success, winning three cups in their initial spell in the Altrincham League before the Under-21s won a unique treble in the Leigh and District competition, the Championship, Edgar Webb Cup and Most Sporting Team award.
The maturing of these players lead to Fives re-entering the open-age scene again, taking the momentous step of joining the Manchester Football League in 2005, a year after successfully negotiating a 25-year lease on the Harriet Street ground in Walkden.
The Club also developed an excellent relationship with our friends and neighbours at Walkden Cricket Club, and after securing grant funding, began to develop and improve the ground, working hard to raise the standard of the playing surface, and erecting fencing around the ground.
2006 saw Fives extend the family by introducing a reserve team, and integrating local junior and veterans teams as the Club looks to develop closer links with the local community, whilst maintaining the development of the Club and it’s ground.
The start of the 2008 / 2009 season saw the club drop the over 35's veterans team and under 21's team and add to the armoury a new under 14's team.
This season was also a very significant one for the club as it celebrated its' 40th Anniversary. The club marked the occasion with several events; a disco, Fives Legends vets match, Junior Tournament and rounded off the season with a dinner dance at Buile Hill Park Banqueting Hall. All the events were well supported and highlighted the club's standing in the local football scene.
